5 Stars Yelp Review
3/8/2009

It was our first time to 1515. My wife and I decided that we wanted to go somewhere special/new for our anniversary. We noticed that Denver's restaurant week ended on the 6th (our true anniversary) so we went to 1515 on 3/7/09 (skip crowds).

Upon reviewing the menu with the waiter, he informed us that the seasonal menu will be changing in 2-3 weeks. Seemed fine to my wife and me, but it was our first time. On the bottom of the first course page, we noticed that there are four options for a chef's choice dinner. You can choose 5 or 7 courses and choose to have the sommelier pair wine or not. We chose the 5 course chef's choice. The waiter informed us that you can ask to exclude or include any of the items on the standard menu. My wife told the waiter no salmon or pork, I said yes please to the Carpaccio.

On the waiter's recommendation, we ordered a bottle of 2006 Van Duzer Pinot Noir that well with all of the dishes except the Carpaccio.

Before our first course, we received a small tart filled with salmon mouse topped with caviar. Despite that fact that we said no salmon, it was fantastic! The first course of our 5 courses arrived as soup. It was sunchoke soup, artichoke bisque with pumpkin seeds, apples and pumpkin oil. I usually skip soups because their too salty or bland. Not the case in this soup. The second course, seared scallop, had an amazing mix of greens, sauce and textures (freeze dried corn) that excited our taste buds. The next course was our choice, the Wagyu Carpaccio. It was the first time that I've had an Asian twist on one of my favorite appetizers. The blend of toppings sitting upon the meat was wonderfully delicious. The fourth course was seared monkfish with green curry sauce and monk fish liver pâté. Before this I'd never eaten Monkfish, but certainly dined on its liver at sushi bars. The fish was cooked to perfection, soft and moist inside while firm on the outside. The green curry with cous cous was an interesting pairing which complemented the fish quite well. The fifth course was the Buffalo strip loin. OH MY GOSH. The steak was perfect and paired with a super fresh tasting gnocchi. Superb and a surprise. By my count, we've had an appetizer and five courses... Should we have had desert as our last course? Ah, the next course, the sixth course, was their free form chocolate crème brule, basically a ball of chocolate that tastes like a cross of custard and chocolate mousse. Quite tasty. To finish the meal, the owner sent over a couple of glasses of tawny port; quite a nice touch and good finish to our wonderful meal.

More than once the owner, Gene Tang, came by and made sure our meal was to our liking. He was also responsible for sending over the port. Thanks Gene! My wife and I loved your restaurant and will surely be back.

Overall I loved our meal, portions and preparation. I read a few of the other reviews and cannot understand their complaints. During Denver's restaurant week, people often expect to receive a $100 meal for $52.80. This simply isn't possible. Perhaps next time they should stop being cheap and give this restaurant a try with its full menu. With wine our dinner was $200 for six courses, a bottle of wine ($60), coffee with dessert and a port to finish the meal.

Definitely a good choice for foodies, couples, and anyone who enjoys fresh well prepared cuisine.

Extraordinary Service

Our waiter greeted us promptly and was well-informed about the menu, including specials, and the wine list. After presenting and pouring our bottle, he refilled our glasses promptly but discreetly throughout the night. He was accommodating and amusing when we asked him questions, but respectful and discreet while we were talking - which, for me, is critical for servers to understand. Additionally, the owner himself greeted us after our first course to ask how everything was.
The food reflects both culinary creativity and respect for the ingredients. The service is the best I've EVER had.
